Brightline Accidents by the Numbers

Since beginning service in 2017, Florida’s Brightline train has been involved in at least 182 fatalities, making it the deadliest rail system per mile in the United States. On average, a fatality has occurred roughly every two weeks of operation. Most incidents involve pedestrians or drivers attempting to beat the train, trespassing on the tracks, or cases ruled as suicides rather than equipment or operator failures. In 2024 alone, Brightline reported 41 deaths and 74 injuries, with statistics showing an average of one death every 32,000 train-miles—significantly higher than the national rail safety average.

Common causes of train accidents in South Florida

  • Equipment failure – Defective or poorly maintained train components can lead to mechanical malfunctions that result in collisions or derailments. When rail companies fail to properly inspect, repair, or maintain their equipment, they may be held responsible for injuries or fatalities caused by those failures.

  • Human error – Train accidents often occur because of mistakes made by the operator, such as traveling above safe speed limits, becoming distracted, or failing to respond appropriately to track conditions. Operator negligence remains one of the leading causes of serious rail collisions and derailments.

  • Rail crossing failures – Malfunctioning crossing gates, warning lights, or signals can prevent drivers and pedestrians from realizing a train is approaching, significantly increasing the risk of a collision.

  • Track deterioration – Railroad tracks endure constant wear and heavy usage. If tracks are not properly maintained, repaired, or replaced in a timely manner, defects can develop and contribute to derailments or other serious accidents.

  • Signal and switch malfunctions – Faulty signals or improperly functioning track switches can fail to warn conductors of hazards or route trains incorrectly, potentially leading to dangerous crashes.
